What is 3D modeling?

3d modeling is the process of developing a mathematical representation of any 3 dimensional surface of an object through a specialized software. The product is called a 3d model. 3d models are computer generated representations of living or inanimate things. Usually, 3d modeling as a scientific technological field is used to make models for creating 3d animations, game development engine, classroom simulations, vfx breakdowns, film and video, product design among others. 3d modeling and affiliated fields have gained numerous usage in recent past owing to the revolution of scientific inventions.

As an artist, I use 3d modeling to create photorealistic images of real-life things....including people, vehicles, nature, building etc. With 3d design, art becomes effective since one is assured of quality and realism which is the ultimate desire of any artist. However, this doesn't mean that is easy. While I might not be intending to speak from an attitude perspective, any rational 3d artist will approve that most 3d softwares are complex and 3d modeling is not always a cup of tea. One is coerced to sit behind a computer for extended hours, only trying to design a primitive or antique object. You can actually use a whole day to design a handkerchief!!

I would highly recommend artists, especially here in Africa to think beyond the box, or think without the box altogether! By this I mean to call to inflate your idea from a 2d representation_ it can never look so real.... But with 3d program, people will actually argue whether you captured a real photo or you edited a previously captured one.

While there exist a wide range of 3d softwares...see here: 3d softwares list , I would highly recommend that you choose blender based on the following reasons:
i. There is a substantial bunch of easily understandable tutorials that is readily available. This makes learning easy. Youtube is full of blender tutorials from those of a beginner, rookie to those of a champion. I would highly recommend you to subscribe to blender guru.com to get high quality tutorials...blender guru.

ii. I find easy to use and actually faster since there are very many key board shortcuts which makes modeling time managing. However, many users have despised this and prefer icon-based graphical interface.

iii. The program itself is very easy to install, including carrying it around in a flash disk or even your phone memory; it's only 50 MB. Compare this with others like C4D or 3D max and see the difference. These latter ones are gigantic in memory capacity requiring 3-4GB!

iv. Blender undergoes a constant review where the program developers develop an improved version every twice in a year. This means that there is continued review of bugs, important updates or review of the entire software.

Why artists should use Blender and

other 3d softwares

Have you ever used Ms Paint? or Gimp? or photoshop?  How easy was it to draw anything so that it appeared remarkably real?

Lighting system.

Lighting is one of the prime concepts that ever give a sketch any photorealism. Compare these images below.

You notice that in the one using Ms paint, it depends on the artist's judgement to know where and how the shadow will be projected. However, on the one using blender, the system calculates the dimensions of the shadow and maps it independent of the artist.
This is very essential for a complicated scene and high detailed images. In doing this in blender, you place the lights e.g the sun at a desired point and blender argues out where the shadow will be regardless of how many shadows are in one image, or regardless of how many shadows interact in their projection. see the image below

It can be noted that the light and the shadow has been calculated perfectly by blender to give a realism impression of the 3d text. Doing this on a 2d software would never give you this realism in which if it is the case, you would take eternity!
